Online Presences – Part 1
My DA, will be a continuation of my project last semester which documents my bike riding journeys. Last weekend, I did a bike ride from Bombo station to Kiama station and around the town of Kiama and the blowhole with my friend. Now I am in the process of editing the video that I recorded and will soon post this on my YouTube channel. There were some problems that experienced on my laptop that meant I couldn’t access iMovie which is the software I use to edit my videos. So I swapped the editing process to my iPad which I am still getting used to as it has a different user interface than the iMovie on my laptop.
Online Presence – Part 2
I fell off the bike when I was riding last weekend, and I have to take it to the bike shop for fixing because somewhere was making weird sound. The bike mechanic found out it is because the derailleur clamp was broken, so they repaired them for me. Other than the derailleur clamp, my GoPro handlebar mount was also broken, so I can’t film the rest of the journey. But I brought a drone on Tuesday and hope I can film a few more different angles and make it more interesting for audience. I am now editing the second video I did with my friends.
My Digital Artefact for BCM114 is a vlog which follows my bike riding journeys. The aim of my videos was to let people know more cycling areas in Wollongong, and to show people how convenient to ride around Wollongong as there are many public bike facilities such as special bike tracks with toilets and cafes conveniently found along most cycle tracks as well as being fitted with bike racks so riders can safely store their bikes near these facilities. And by uploading videos on YouTube, it will be the message to the public about cycling around Wollongong, and that’s a good example of “medium is the message”.
Cycling is a great way to minimise a person’s environmental impact because many people rely on driving cars nowadays. As well as the positive environmental impact, cycling also offers many experiences to see beautiful scenic views. I also want to use these videos to show people how they should plan their trip and give insight to where people should pay attention to any road rules. Some tips will also be provided when you ride and what essential items to bring along to ensure peoples get the most enjoyable cycling experience possible.
I choose to do bike riding journeys for my Digital Artefact because I have been riding since I was 4 years old and have loved it ever since. Cycling is a very good opportunity to do exercise for people of all ages, you can ride to different places and explore. I came up with this idea from my passion for riding around Wollongong.
Before I started filming, I did some research about how to film whilst cycling. I saw that many people used a GoPro and attached it on their bicycle helmet or bought an extra handlebar mount to set the camera on the handlebar of the bike. I planned to use a helmet strap mount but after completing the research, I choose to buy a handlebar mount because it is more stable as the helmet attachment can be unbalanced for example when the rider turns their head doing a shoulder check which can make the audience will feel dizzy after lots of turning.
After I did the beta, I found out there were many things that I could do to improve the video and make it more interesting. The Google Map segment in my video was too long and may be boring for the audience, so in the next video I decided not to talk about these details in such depth, instead I would simplify it by just showing the route. I will also decide to experiment with different camera angles to film when I ride, for example setting the camera on the side of the road and filming myself going down hills or have someone else to film me.
This video can appeal to everyone as the audience because cycling is a very good opportunity to do exercise for people of all ages. You can do cycling with a group of friends or individually. By showing different places around Wollongong, it can help cyclist to know more places to create more enjoyable riding experience. Families can also find it informative because they can plan fun activities to accompany with the cycling as my videos show good places to go for example the beach for swimming or to the park for a picnic.
